What is Media Blasting?

Why choose Media Blasting?

Looking for a fast and effective way to remove coatings including paint, filler and rust?  Crushed glass media blasting has replaced sand blasting and is one of the most effective blast cleaning systems available.  Media blasting is our go-to blast cleaning choice when working on steel – especially car shells – as it not only removes all of the coating but leaves the surface ready to paint.

Media blasting is also a great option during property renovation. Are you considering exposing brickwork to provide an ultra-modern industrial finish within your home or office space?  This blast cleaning method is often the best option to remove paint from brickwork, as our operators know exactly how to control our machinery to provide the most effective finish.  Glass is also the favoured media when cleaning oak beams, as it exposes the grain of the wood, leaving a beautiful finish.

The crushed glass that we use is ground-down recycled glass bottles.  Our media is non-toxic and can be disposed of with regular household waste.

What is Media Blasting with crushed glass?

Media Blasting is much the same process as soda blasting.  It still uses compressed air to propel media onto a surface, however different materials to soda are used.

Our most popular method of Media Blasting is often referred to as ‘Crushed Glass Blasting’ which is when very fine glass are used.  Media blasting is as safe and effective as soda when used to remove paint etc, however it leaves the surface slightly rough, unlike the smooth finish usually provided by soda.

Media Blasting can be a quicker process than Soda Blasting so is often the preferred choice when paint stripping vehicles (where the end result is due to be painted over!).

Is media blasting a noisy method?

As a large compressor is used, media blasting is a relatively noisy process.  Operators are required to wear ear protection whilst the compressor is running and request that anyone in the immediate area do the same.

Can SBL remove lead based paint from buildings?

Due to new regulations, additional care must be taken when working on any property built before 1993, as it is likely to have been painted using a lead-based paint.

Within smaller, residential properties, we will complete our own lead test to check whether lead is present.  Larger-scale building will require a lead test to be completed by a third party.

We CAN still remove paint if checks show a lead content, however additional safety measures need to be taken, all of which we can discuss with you and arrange as necessary.

Lead has proven to be a significant health risk and should not be ignored.

Where is the work completed?

We are pleased to offer media blasting services in our purpose built Blast Room within our Unit in Bilston, West Midlands.  We are also fully mobile and can complete work on site when needed.

What about pre and post clean up?

As crushed glass causes no damage to the surrounding environment, very little clean up is required – the used media is swept up and disposed of as regular waste.  If sensitive equipment is near by or work is to be completed in a busy area, we would advice masking or tenting the item before commencing work.

Why are your prices not fixed?

To ensure we offer you the best rates possible, we often need to complete a test patch on the surface that requires work.  As some items may need more attention than others, for example vehicle bodywork may have several layers of paint to remove, the price will vary accordingly.  Once we have given you a quote you can rest assured this will not change, even if – on the odd occasion – the work takes a little longer than expected.

Why is it more expensive to complete work at my address?

When completing work at your address, we need to factor in additional running costs to your quotation.  This includes travel costs as well as running costs of equipment, as the mobile compressor runs from power generated from our van’s engine.
